You Are Not Alone

Ink on Pastel Paper – Words: Anonymous

I an writing this as our kitten wriggles around my feet, begging me to pick her up and put her in my lap. I would except she is intrigued by the keyboard and cannot help herself to get up and walk all over the keys. So she meows and wriggles some more, hoping I will pick her up soon.

Dogs are like children, cats are like teenagers. Dogs have owners, cats have staff. If you have either or both, you know what I mean. Dogs are always happy to see you, cats sort of exude “whatever” all the time. Dogs are happy just to be with you, cats allow you in their presence and expect you to be grateful that they have allowed you to see them. I could go on, but you get the drift.

No matter which way you lean, pets bring a fantastic element to our lives. They help us remember that we are not the center of the universe, no matter what our team or paycheck makes us believe. Pets keep us grounded, give us someone to serve, and help us remember that we all need love in all sorts of forms. They keep us scheduled, warm, and help us feel wanted even if it is only to scratch their ears.

Children, pets, family, friends, even our coworkers all help round off our rough edges and bring out our best. Even when they jump in our lap and walk on the keyboard, or reply all way too often, they all make us better people. By bringing other living beings into our lives we grow beyond our own self importance and are reminded that we are NOT the center of the universe, no matter how your dog makes you feel! Spend time today with someone or something else – a pet, a child, a friend, a coworker – and give thanks that you are not alone.
