Oh the Perils of Being an Adult!

Ink on Pastel Paper – Words: Catherine Cook

Our lives are full of choices – what to wear, what to eat, how to utilize the hours in each day, who to love, what to do, and most importantly who we want to be when we grow up. These choices require decisions, some of which come easy and others take years to confirm. The challenge in being an adult is that life demands that we make decisions, and not making a decision or continually delaying it IS a decision.

Life would be so much easier if we let someone else make all our decisions for us. Let the media, current trends, the internet, our boss, or even our family and parents choose and confirm everything we do. Sounds grand until you realize the enormity of what you are sacrificing. We would be giving up everything that we are to live a life without conflict or doing anything wrong. Yikes! How would we learn anything? How would w know who we truly are, what we want AND the joy in working hard to get it?

When we give up our freedom to choose we are in essence telling the universe not to bother in giving us anything else. We would be squandering the most precious gift we have in life which is free will. History has shown us how that works out, when one person wants to control everyone and everything, it doesn’t go very well. Something within us demands options, demands a say in living our own lives, demands being able to do and say and love whatever or whomever we want.

So why do we give up so easily on ourselves and our goals when making decisions and hard work is the core of who we are as humans? Sure it’s hard, sure there will be mistakes and yes not everyone will like you or agree with your choices. So what?!? If you can rest your head each night and know you made decisions that mattered even if they were small, then it was a good day. I encourage you to get up again tomorrow, make some decisions and make it a good day.

  1. I think we give up because it gets tough and we’re not confident enough to keep going. So, it’s our confidence that we need to also build 🙂
