Welcome to a new monthly feature of my blog, a guest writer. Today’s post was written by Sandra Wells. Enjoy!
This quote, from the book Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?, was actually one of the discarded ideas for a book title. Everyone loved it so much that now it’s all over the internet as an updated version of the adage “fake it till you make it.” But I think it’s a bit more than that.
Most people have at least one thing that transports them to their happy place. Happy-place items include songs, clothes, shoes (not the same as clothes and deserve their own category), a hot shower, a piece of jewelry, a long drive, a card from someone special, a picture, a conversation with someone that always makes you feel better, the smell of coffee or, of course, some lip gloss.
For me, it’s a perfume aptly called, Coffee Break. For reasons that only Dr. Phil can explain, when I wear this perfume it’s like a having a superhero cape on under my clothes. And what is the superpower that said superhero cape (aka perfume) gives me? Being the calm in the middle of the storm; being an example of how to handle stress in a healthy and productive way; showing people in my life how to pull yourself out of a dark place.
I grew up believing that happiness was something that I would find. Like one day I was going to open an old closet and happiness was going to fall out of an old box that I would dust off and go “oh there it is!” No one ever told me that, as an adult, getting back on track and re-locating my happy was going to be A LOT of work and a very deliberate effort. But the work is worth it. Because your superpower is also a great gift that you can give to those around you. I have seen a single person change the dynamic of a room, bring peace to an entire household, and change the trajectory of someone’s life.
A Big Thank you thank you thank you to Ann for letting me do this! I asked her to write a guest post on her blog so that I could get my creative juices flowing and it worked! THANK YOU! …Thank you Sandra for reminding us that being happy requires deliberate effort!

Thank you Sandra. Still, I always return for another AB Art Explosion. I’ve never ehard of ‘coffee break’. I imagine hazelnut, french vanilla, cinnamon, hyacinth, and roses.

I agree! I always assumed being happy was a given, rather than an active life choice! I think it’s really brave to admit your unhappiness and then actively try to change it. I gotta check out that perfume!

This is my new favorite quote. “I grew up believing that happiness was something that I would find. Like one day I was going to open an old closet and happiness was going to fall out of an old box that I would dust off and go “oh there it is!” ”. Thank you for this. – coincidentally, I recently cleaned out my closet and that made happiness a little bit more obtainable for me. Love you & your beautiful mind.
