Hush, Little Baby

Ink on Watercolor Paper – Words: Traditional Southern Lullaby

This week I sang this one to my granddaughter as we were riding in the car. She was fussy and wanted to be home, and we were no where near there. So I started singing this and everyone in the car got quiet…including her. I ran out of verses so I started making up what Daddy was going to buy. I mean really, it isn’t hard, it just has to rhyme…

Huh little baby, don’t say a word
Daddy’s going to buy you a mocking bird.
If that mockingbird won’t sing,
Daddy’s gonna buy you a diamond ring.
If that diamond ring is brass
Daddy’s gonna buy you a looking glass.
If that looking glass gets broke
Daddy’s gonna buy you a nanny goat…

– Traditional Southern Lullaby

I remember hearing this one as I fell to sleep as a child. Maybe it was the rhyming, maybe it was the clever items, maybe it was just being lulled to sleep by the sound of someone’s voice. Whichever way it was, most children will stop fussing and pass out as the verses and rhyming go on and on. What a blessed moment it is when that child you want to go to sleep finally nods off…whew! Job well done, until who knows when, right?

Speaking of sleep, I hope you are getting plenty. It is such an important element of our mental and physical health. Our time zones are all botched up as we have been multiple weeks on the other side of the globe. We head home today, which means we magically land only a few hours after we departed Tokyo…the wonders of crossing the international date line. I am writing this tomorrow, yet for home it is today. The challenge becomes getting back on “normal” time and resting when you are supposed to be resting. Who knew world travel was a lot like putting a baby to sleep. Maybe I can get the Flight Attendant to sing this one as we fly home…

Rest well, and we will sign again tomorrow…
