I often have people ask me for a piece they like but want in a different color. So when I create I sometimes do multiples to stay ahead of the game. And it is an adventure in lettering to do the same phrase in two very different sized frames…you never know exactly how it is going to turn out.
I was touched by these words from Ralph Waldo Emerson about kindness. He reminds us that kindness does not always have to magnanimous, or scheduled, perfectly timed or even magnificently executed. Sometimes the simplest act of kindness can change everything.
You cannot do too soon kindness,
– Ralph Waldo Emerson 1882
for you never know how soon
it will be too late.
We helped a friend move recently. She was downsizing and had a lot of things to move into her new space while she waited for the actual movers to arrive days later. We moved boxes she had already packed, bed frames, linens, kitchen basics and her favorite chair. She wanted to be sure to have somewhere to sleep, eat and sit as she waited for everything else to arrive. It didn’t really take very long and she was very thankful for our help. We were glad to do it as we remember moving AND she is our dear friend. Weeks later she gave us a thank you note with a gift card in it for a dinner out. We did not help her to get a free meal, she was simply thanking us with kindness. We ate out tonight and gave thanks for her generosity and for her new home!
We were out recently and a woman needed help with her car. She didn’t know what was wrong so my hubby popped the lid and fixed her problem lickity-split. She was grateful and a bit surprised that he stepped up and helped without expecting anything. Her father arrived a few minutes after it was fixed and my husband let him know that he hoped if our daughter were ever in need like that, someone would show her the same kindness.
We were at an outlet Mall and a woman was carrying a lot of bags. Her hands were full, her arms were full, and she could barely see where she was going. We stepped in and carried her bags to her car…in the Georgia, August heat. Whew! She thanked us for our kindness and we went back to shopping…in the air conditioning!
You cannot do too soon kindness…..for you never know when an opportunity will arise. Our chance to be kind come up quickly and if you are not already prepared with a kindness mindset, you might miss a chance to spread a bit of kindness in this world. And let’s face it, EVERYONE can use a little kindness now and then. We are all in need AND in an instant you may watch your chance to be kind pass you by. Don’t be stingy with it, don’t think about your plans, your schedule, how it might look or who might see you…just do it! Kindness is NEVER the wrong move.
