Inktober Day 29: The Joke’s On Them

Ink on Sketch Paper – Lyrics Brandi Carlisle

She had been around the music business for a while, then in 2019 she broke out of the mold, won Grammy’s and electrified audiences with this tune, The Joke. Brandi Carlisle and her team wrote this tune as a mantra for the underdogs, the people who others have overlooked and underestimated. The words are a great encouragement that under appreciated does not mean you are worthless, just the opposite. Those who look down on you, take you for granted, or even expect very little of you are the ones that will be surprised…the Joke’s on them!

We’ve all felt that way. We’ve been told we are NOT something – talented, bright, wanted, important, significant – and it is hard not to believe those words when that is all you hear. Good news is your story is not done yet. Everyday is a new chance, a new beginning, a new opportunity to do what you want, when you want, how you want without worrying what other people think. I love the line in this song…I’ve been to the movies, I’ve seen how it ends…TOTAL encouragement that what other people think is not at all how things work themselves out.

No matter how people make you feel, what they say, how they treat you – you are no joke! To quote Eleanor Roosevelt, no one can make you feel inferior without your permission. So stop giving them permission. Get out there and do the work, get things done, flush out your ideas and keep going. Stop owwwrying about what other people think or say, there will always be critics. The one who finishes the race, wins the race, succeeds is the one who does what they are called to do no matter what anyone else thinks. BE THAT PERSON…and let the joke be on them!
