I have been creating calligraphy for more than thirty-three years. Wow! That seems hard to believe, and yet when I look at my studio and the piles of work and projects I have done, I can believe it. I greatly enjoy helping people see the beauty in all sort of things – paper, pen and any kind of surface. I also enjoy teaching and helping artists build their own creative lives. That being said, it is time for a new adventure…
I am in the process of starting a new magazine – Paper, Pen and Surface. It will be a quarterly magazine that features artists from around the globe that work with paper, pen or on any kind of surface. My goal is to create a magazine that builds a community, and that community will be a space where artists learn, grow, and eventually cross-pollinate. We have a framework we are buildIng out and plan to have our first electronic issue published in December, to be followed by a print copy/electronic issue in March. Please check out our site and see what you think.
I had someone ask me why a magazine in this digital age? The impetus for the idea came when a cherished magazine for calligraphers stopped publishing this past fall. It left a hole in my world that I thought others my be experiencing as well. So I talked it over with two of my team and they agreed we should create our own publication to fill that gap and move it all beyond the limits of our own imagination and knowledge base. We have been working for the past nine months and things are going well. We have reached out to vendors, printers, artists and such to help us gather content…which is pretty incredible. When we say, “Oh, that’s cool!!!” We know we are on the right track.
Just so you know, I will continue this blog until I at least hit my goal of 1,000 art filled posts, which should be around the time we publish our second issue in March 2023. After that, it may not change or it may change to a different more global focus, we will just have to wait and see. I want to thank you all for your support and enthusiasm for my work. Who I have become as an artist, a leader, an entrepreneur and a creative soul has been beyond my imagination. I look forward to sharing more of my work and going beyond what I thought was possible…so stay tuned, check out the magazine and I hope you will share the link with any creative people you know.
