Getting old is not for sissies. It takes courage, stamina and determination to deal with the medical establishments, prescriptions, and the process of staying strong. Getting old means we are in a constant battle between what is happening to our bodies and minds and what we really want to be thinking and feeling. Inside we feel like we are young, vibrant and indestructible. Outside people see the signs of aging that a well lived life leave behind.
I think it is better to rust out than to be beautifully preserved leaving you unable to use the best parts of yourself for fear of leaving a mark. In a culture that is obsessed with youth and perfection I enjoy meeting people who have embraced their lives and live them to the fullest. They learn new things, test their limits, enjoy going and seeing and doing things up to the last moments of their last breath.
Today is a new day, a new opportunity to do something with the time you have been given. Clean up your world, learn something new, teach someone else how to do something, or simply refine your gift so you have more to give away. Sure you will get tired, and may feel a little pain as the limits of your current age serve to remind you of the years gone by. Don’t let that prevent you for giving it your all. If this old pickup truck is any reminder, leave all you have in the field of battle. Today you begin creating your legacy for the future. Only you have what it takes to make your world a better place.
