Life for our puppies is pretty simple. They work hard and then play hard, which means they sleep hard. Here you see them after an evening of Puppy Training classes. They are learning all the basics and it really wears them out. Learning and changing habits requires a lot of energy, especially when you are growing up all at the same time.
Watching them sleep reminded me of the times in my life when I made big changes and fell into bed, exhausted and more tired than I could ever remember. Change is hard, work is hard, having the courage to learn new things is hard. It takes energy and effort that can leave you empty at the end of the day. Just because it is hard doesn’t mean it isn’t worth it. Anything worth doing is worth putting everything into it, which means you will be tired.
Think about the last time you put all you had into something and how good it felt to sleep after a hard day’s efforts. It is a special time in life and really builds our self image, our self esteem, and our ability to believe we can work hard and get things done. Whatever it is you are changing will wear you out, and that’s a good thing. Don’t let exhaustion prevent you from wanting to continue. It only lasts for a short time. Eventually the change is accomplished and your world finds a more peaceful rhythm and what was a change is now your new normal.
So go to sleep having given it your all. Have strange exciting dreams of what is yet to come, and keep going until you change and learn what you need to learn. Work hard, play hard, sleep hard.
