Brrrr…the Reminder That We Are Not in Control

It may be early, but it feels like Winter has already arrived in Georgia. We are fifteen degrees below our normal temperatures and everyone is startled by this strange post Thanksgiving weather. I know we shouldn’t complain as next week’s forecast predicts temperatures into the mid sixties, yet as humans we always seem to be startled and complain when things do not go as normal.

Isn’t life about things not always being ‘normal’? Isn’t variety the spice of life? Don’t we encourage people to step out of the box, leave normal behind, try something new? So why is this weather thing such a topic of contention? We can’t control it. A Weatherperson is the only person who can be wrong everyday on the job and still have a job. And we know that the weather changes all the time, so why do we complain about it so much? Maybe we complain or get exasperated about the weather because we can’t do anything about it, and there is always weather. No one can get around without weather. It is always there and always out of our control. So maybe the issue is we like things to change and be different, we like variety and spice when it is our choice. But change the weather unexpectedly and everyone goes into a frenzy because we have no choice. It is done to us not with us.

I think this concept is true for most changes in life that are beyond our control. We want new and different, variety and spice when we choose it and can be a participant, not when it happens to us and we feel like a hostage. Weather is definitely out of our control and it is done to us whether we like it or not. So it’s not really about the weather, it is about control. Let’s face it, we all have some level of control issues. If you don’t think you do then you are in denial. We all want to control something and when we can’t we succumb to our more basic emotions and fall into the habit of complaining. We logically know we cannot control everything, yet somehow we buy the lie everyday that we are in control. I think weather is God’s way of reminding us that we are not in control.

So as you step outside today know that you are not in control of the weather, you never will be, you never will be able to change the weather. Ok, you can move to a different climate, but that type of change is a topic for another post.
