“The New Phone Books are Here!!!”

Do you remember the movie The Jerk starring Steve Martin? There is a scene where he has left home and moved into his own place. He gets a phone and one day runs outside screaming, “The new phone books are here! The new phone books are here!” He quickly looks up his name and sees that he is listed. The joy on his face and the dance of enthusiasm that he does COMPLETELY corresponds to how I felt today.

I will be teaching for the first time at the John C Campbell Folk School next year, and the catalog arrived in the mail today. I ran up and down our hall scream, “The new phone books are here!” Somehow seeing it in print made it all seem real, true and that much more exciting. It’s really going to happen.

I have been a fan of the folk school for years, and stated many years go that I would love for my work to be accepted so I could teach there. Today when the catalog arrived and I saw my name listed as a faculty member, I couldn’t help but do the Steve Martin phone book dance. It’s one of those moments when you realize that all your hard work has been recognized and the effort paid off.

When was the last time you worked for something and it finally paid off? Maybe you are working that hard now and can see the light at the end of the tunnel. My encouragement to you today is that hard work does pay off, good work does get recognized, and dreams do come true.

If you are interested in attending my five day course, please enroll at the John C Campbell Folk School website John C. Campbell Folks School. The dates are February 10-15, 2019. It will be a great opportunity on your creative journey…can’t wait to see you there!
