No matter when you grew up, I hope you learned this one. It’s a classic, patriotic tribute and a wonderfully emotional one. I remember singing this in many events, at many times in my life, and I was greatly touched as I wrote out the lyrics.
I wanted to feature the chorus, hence the big, black and gold lettering. I also wanted to play with different pens on watercolor paper – sizes, shapes and thickness. I enjoyed writing the same words with different pens AND seeing their interaction on the completed page.
Muster your best patriotic voice and let’s get serious about singing this one!
Mine eyes have seen the glory
– Julia Ward Howe 1910
of the coming of the Lord.
He is trampling out the vintage
where the grapes of wrath are stored.
He hath loosed the faithful lightening
of his terrible, swift sword.
His truth of marching on!
Glory, glory Hallelujah!
Glory, glory Hallelujah!
Glory, glory Hallelujah!
His truth is marching on!
I see flags flying, people singing loud and proud, and I see faith. Faith in each other, faith in our nation, and faith in the people who are also singing these words out loud. It is one thing to say you have faith, it is another to put it to song.
Is America perfect, definitely not. Do we fight too much with each other and argue over stupid things, which eventually delays our ability to actual get things done…yes indeed. Are we a bit self centered and over impressed by what we have accomplished in 250 years…sure. And yet, look at what we have accomplished, look at who we are and who we are becoming, and look at where we hope to be in the future.
This song is not just about patriotic pride. This tune reminds me that we need to give voice to our faith because it is what this nation was founded upon. People dared to believe that we could rule ourselves, live in peace and be one nation under God, with liberty and justice for all.
There are three more days left in Inktober 2026. So please stay tuned to the last three songs…
