Kookaburra

Ink on Black Paper – Words: Traditional Australian Round

This tune comes to us from Australis. It is a traditional round. This was a fun one. I played with letters and white markers, then added colors in the overlapping sections. The lyrics are in the small white letters around the edges.

I first learned this song once my Dad came home from a business trip to Australia. I thought a few of the woods were funny – kookaburra??? – and yet it had a very catchy tune.

Are you ready to sing…here are the words:

Kookaburra sits in the old gum tree
Merry, merry king of the bush is he.
Laugh Kookaburra, laugh Kookaburra
Gay your life must be.

Kookaburra sits in the old gum tree
Eating all the gum drops he can see.
Stop Kookaburra, stop Kookaburra
Leave a few for me

– Traditional Australian Round

I have never been to Australia, yet would love to go some day. I want to hold a koala bear and watch a kookaburra eat gum drops! I do hope that really happens.

The ability to travel is an amazing gift. Seeing new places, meeting new people, seeing things that have nothing to do with where you live. It helps us learn and appreciate how to better understand other people and ourselves. There is a better perspective about what is important when we see how other people live. What we thought was important may only be of nominal value in another country or place. I think that helps us determine for ourselves what we really want in our lives AND how hard we want to work to get it.

Today I wish for you to travel and have an adventure. Be it across the world or down a new street in your own town. However it is you are going to experience the world, do it with curiosity and kindness. I’m not sure I want to eat a gum drop from a tree, yet I’m willing to watch a kookaburra do it!
