It is week twenty-seven in our year long calligraphy challenge, and the topic this week was artificial intelligence…ugh! We were asked to create something around this topic, using text about the topic or get AI to create the text for us. I chose to find the definition of AI and wrote it very small at the bottom. I could only imagine how a computer might layout the letters for these words, so I went a bit more wonky knowing that a computer could not keep up. Here is the definition I wrote:
Artificial Intelligence leverages computers and machines to mimic the problem-solving and decision-making capabilities of the human mind…
I must admit, I think we are not prepared for the smothering bonanza that the use of this technology has in store for us mere mortals. Sort of like the internet, which is the bathroom wall of life (anyone can post anything), and how out of control it has become. People’s lives and livelihoods will be greatly impacted, the public will be duped, and bad people will use it for nefarious outcomes. Does it have it’s value, sure…not sure what that actually is…so holding out to see how it contributes to the greater good.
In the end our lives are measured by how we loved and were loved, by how we made the lives of others better AND how our contributions made the world a better place for the generations following in our footsteps. Maybe AI can help us do that, I don’t know. I do know that art is unique, creative, inspiring and to only be able to mimic what the human mind can create does not seem very good for creating beautiful art.
So, I left behind the thought of AI replacing everything unique and creative on the plant to lean into doing something creative, original and inventive of my own. I can fear AI, I can ignore AI, or I can continue to create knowing that AI will never be able to duplicate what unique people have in store. Computers need people, people can live without computers…take that AI!
