Stay True, Stay Blue

Ink on rice paper – Words: Raoul Dufy

If you ask Americans what their favorite color is, more than eighty-five percent will tell you blue. It is a color that is universally loved, appears in the flags of a multitude of nations, we wear it in blue jeans, and the most popular car color. Blue adds tone and life to other colors as a backdrop, a foreground, and a beautiful day is all about a clear, blue sky.

When I read this quote it made me think that the color blue is a lot like our personal character. By choice we choose who we are, how we work, and our decisions let others see our beliefs in action. Just as blue maintains it’s own character throughout all it’s many tones, we need to work to do the same in all situations.

Character is who we are when no one is looking. It is what we do that builds the core of our being and guides us when times get rough. When we neglect our character by doing things that undermine it, plan to spend a great many days or years trying to build it back. Once good character is lost it may be lost forever. When we want people to believe us, invest in us or our ideas, help us solve, resolve, or out of trouble it is our character that makes it easier for them to say, “Yes!” If we do not value who we are and what we stand for, then why would anyone want to trust us, our decisions, or our choices?

Never forget that it is our actions – how we maintain our character throughout all the shades and tones of life – that really makes up who we are. It is what people know, trust and believe when all else fails. So stay blue, stay true, and do the right thing even when it isn’t easy.
