The Peacefulness of Sleep

One of my favorite times in our household is when I hear nothing but deep sleep. The dogs are asleep, my husband is napping, even the cat and I are in some state of sleep or rest. Faint sounds like snoring or heavy breathing abound and the silence is one of my favorite moments in life. It means every creature is at peace and nothing is previewing us from enjoying the wonderful place in which we live together.

Being at peace means we need to allow ourselves to leave behind the woes of the day. It means setting aside electronic devices, the internet, the schedule and the things that fill our heads. It means letting go of it all and sleeping during the day. It means giving yourself time to rest beyond a nightly sleep, which may be the exact thing you need to sustain the rest of your busy life.

Sleep is the one thing of which most of us never get enough. We schedule it and cut it short when we need to get other things done. We stay up late or get up early to fit more into our lives, not realizing that the less we sleep the less life we will have to live. So today I listened to my household sleep. I noted the furry bodies rising and falling with each peaceful breath. I reveled in the snorting of my spouse, and I snuggled down into my light blanket and allowed sleep to invade my bones.

I hope you have a chance to get a good night’s sleep tonight.

  1. Are Biscuit and Gravy ever apart?
    Psalm 3:5
The woods are lovely, dark and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep. Frost.
