The Walls Will Tell You

We were in a fun restaurant in Kyoto, near the Gion district. The walls were covered with stickers from the years gone by. There were photos, match box covers, labels, plates and all sorts of other paraphernalia from the decades. It was a great way to experiences the local culture and enjoy what the people thought was important enough to put all over the walls. You can tell a lot about people by what they hang on their walls.

There are people who do not hang things on their walls because they don’t want to put a hole in the drywall. I had a friend who asked me to help her hang their art, then realized she could not put a nail in any room unless she had agreement from her spouse. So it took them two years to hang the first item in thier home. There are people who only put skinny pictures of themselves out. There are those who change the photos they put out depending upon who is going to visit. And there are those who cover every empty space with items that mean something to them, so their walls are covered from floor to ceiling with works they admire, people they love, and art that inspires them.

So what do your walls say about you? What do they show people is important to you and your family? When someone walks into your spaces for the first time, what do the walls tell them about your values, your tastes, your style, you attachment to where you live. Next time you walk into someone else’s space, check out their walls. If you pay attention the walls will tell you volumes.
