What Are You Leaving Undone?

I read a post by a friend who just lost her mother. When she went home to clear things up, she found a half completed cross word puzzle that here Mom meant to get to later. She said she was ok until she saw that. It reminded her that none of us know when our days will end. She wished she had gone home more often and spent time with her Mom. Maybe helped her complete that puzzle.

What are you leaving until later, asumming there is a later? A goal, a task, a conversation or a life event? Maybe you have things you want to do and are just not sure how to get started…so they stay listed on a scrap piece of paper hanging on your mirror. You think you know what you want, just not totally convinced…so you wait.

There are times when waiting is prudent. It is never a good idea to make life decisions when you are unsure or operating from a position of weakness. When you stand on solid ground and operate from a position of strength you are able to see the multiple sides of things and make appropriate decisions. Waiting can be difficult and scary, yet the best course of action. Waiting can also delay the best that is possible. We fear change so we keep avoiding the future. Or we put off today what we think will get done tomorrow.

What if there is no tomorrow? What if today were your last day? What if you knew when your time would run out? Would you spend today differently? Then why are you not living your life that way now? Tomorrow may not come, so why keep putting the thing you want off until tomorrow? It’s a frightening and enlightening question yet the reality of this human life. No one gets out alive.

Your life, your dreams and those you love are worth taking the risk. Let time be your companion and not just something you wear on your wrist. If nothing else. Think differently about what you are leaving undone…the puzzles of life are worth the effort.
