Inspiration 199: Orange Moth – Red Glasses

This little bug was hanging around our garage door. I had never seen an orange moth. Check out the texture and details in the wings. I can only imagine that the coloring is this way to hide it amongst the trees and leaves of fall. Orange, not a color that is very inconspicuous…yet it works for this insect. It makes this moth unique enough for me to stop and stare.

What makes you unique? We work so hard to fit in, that we forget to embrace the things that make us unique. I wear glasses. I started wearing them when I was 2, wore them until I was 11, then did not have to think about them again until I was over 40. When I had to wear them as a result of “middle age” , I did what any vain female does – I found the most invisible pair I could and wore them begrudgingly. Then one day I met a woman who wore glasses as well. Hers were wild and very colorful, like none I had ever seen before. I complimented her glasses, and she said, “Yeah, I used to wear invisible ones like you, then I embraced wearing glasses and found these.” Wow – I was shocked, a little insulted, and yet she nailed me. She knew I was hiding my unqueness and called me on it.

So now I wear red glasses and have fun shopping for them in Tokyo. I took a hard look at my vanity and put it aside. I would rather be unique than invisible…but it took someone calling me on it to shock me into a different way of thinking. Like this orange moth on our white house, the uniqueness was a shock AND a pleasant surprise. I encourage you today to embrace your uniquess, stop blending in and let the world enjoy your color.
