Overlook the Foibles and the Flaws

Acrylic Ink on Gel Print Monotype – Words: Oscar Wilde

I was demonstrating how to write in a circle to my calligraphy class, and someone asked me how I might use circular spacing in an actual piece of my art. So, I sat at my table while they worked, and I created this piece using these fabulous words from Oscar Wilde:

Never love anyone who treats you like you're ordinary.
- Oscar Wilde 1900

It’s great advice, and a wonderful reminder that no matter who you are or how you are feeling about yourself right now…you are anything but ordinary. Oh! you may not feel that way after the day you’ve had, or the commute you just endured, or even the mile long to do list that nags at your soul. You may have at the ready a list of terrible things you’ve done, mistakes you’ve made, everything and anything that makes you unworthy of love…yet none of that means you are ordinary. Each and every one of us is unique, special, a total original and worthy of being loved for who we are as an individual..even if you are an identical twin! We are all unique! There is something that makes you different, special, and a wonderful example of God’s creation.

Never, and Oscar Wilde did mean NEVER, let anyone love you who thinks you are ordinary. That is not how someone who loves you should make you feel, or how they should think about you. Someone who loves you should cherish your imperfections as well as your greatest traits. They will see your flaws – no doubt – and will love you anyway, maybe even more because your flaws make you human. Perfection is hard to live with and love as it is an unattainable and unsustainable reality. No one is perfect, not even you (no matter what your Mother tells you). It is our imperfections that make us human.

Let me remind you, with the help of Oscar Wilde, that you indeed are special, important, fearfully and wonderfully made. And that means nothing about you is ordinary…so don’t let people treat you that way… especially someone that loves you, or claims they do. Love always sees the special on the inside and can over look the foibles and flaws on the outside.
