Inktober Day 19: Just Listen

Acrylic Ink on Gel print Monotype – Words: Joyce Hunter

Today was a down day. a relaxing day, so I had time to ponder more. These words from Joyce Hunter hit the spot:

The way is long, let us go together.
The way is difficult, let us help each other.
The way is joyful, let us share it.

– Joyce Hunter

In talking with friends recently, I was reminded that we really NEVER know what people are going through. No matter how much we think we know, there is always something else. A family drama, a sickness, financial challenges, emotional havoc, or even just plain old loneliness. We never really y know people until we listen and ask open ended questions. And when we do listen – I mean REALLY listen – people will tell us the truth. And THAT is when we know what is happening in their life journey.

I was texting back and forth with someone who is in the middle of a very wonderful life change. It is exciting, nerve racking and daunting all at the same time. I asked how they were, how they REALLY were, and fourteen texts later they thanked me for asking and not expecting a ‘Fine‘ response. They just needed to get it – whatever it was – off their chest and have someone listen.

No matter how many friends people have. No matter how close they are to their family, No matter how long you have known them, EVERYONE needs someone to listen enough to care and not expect a simple, cliche response. These are the moments that open the gift that is kindness. And who doesn’t need more kindness? You may not be able to send balloons, give them a party, hug them or even hold their hand…you can listen and not talk, not interject, not suggest…just listen. It will make their way and your way that much better.

So today, try just listening, so they know you are willing to share their journey. If you can do that for one person, maybe someone can do the same for you!
