Ask or Accept That Invitation to Dance

Ink and Gel Pen on Mixed Media Paper – Words: Susan Wojicki

I am sharing the pages I have created for my friend Maya who is graduating this week. She will be facing sooooo many opportunities that I wanted to include these words of wisdom from Susan Wojicki:

Opportunies, the good ones, are confusing,
messy and hard to recognize.

– Susan Wojicki

In reading this quote, I was reminded of how opportunities in my own life entered my world. This blog began as I was getting my MBA at night. In my Communications class the professor made us create a blog. The tools were terrible and clunky, I had nothing really to say, yet there was something there. I stated a blog for our gallery y- this blog in fact – and jet get started. My firs posts were awful, and I often did not do anything for long periods of time. I liked the writing part yet felt I had nothing to say. In other words, it was confusing, messy and hard to recognize. Here I am fifteen years later with thousands of followers, more than 3240 posts, and my blog has morphed into something I do or think about everyday. That clunky assignment in my evening class has turned into a fabulous opportunity I might otherwise never had considered. That Communications class really changed my world!

I included this quote in my book for Maya as we often overlook what is right in front of us. We don’t like it, we don’t want it, we can’t see what’s inside it, and we certainly can’t see it’s potential. It is hard work and ugly, yet it is a great opportunity. There’s that word again…opportunity! All too often we pass them right by or dismiss their potential, purely because we haven’t dug deep enough or are not willing to do the work. And work is often the last thing we want when we are seeking out a great opportunity. It means rolling up our sleeves, getting uncomfortable and enduring the ups and downs of something new.

So here is a great reminder to us all that opportunities are often hard to recognize. They are like the cute girl at the dance waiting for the popular boy to like her, when the shy guy sitting down the row who REALLY likes her is too uncomfortable to get up and ask her to dance. NEVER underestimate the power you have within yourself to tackle new and strange things, and to enjoy life by getting up and asking or accepting that invitation to dance!
