I have multiple creative projects in process, which means I am pushing my creative limits more than usual. When I read this quote from Rita Mae Brown, I understood what she meant:
Creativity comes from trust.
– Rita Mae Brown
Trust your instincts.
With all the creative things I have in process, I have had many moments of hard decision making and doubt. Doubting which way to go, follow the plan or take risks, do I know what I’m doing, or do I need to push the envelope even more? Keep doing what you’re doing, do something new, change something – ANYTHING – to stay fresh and challenged. Trust your instincts. I needed these words as a reminder that even when you are in the groove you need to trust yourself, your skills, your ideas and your instincts.
I think we all need that reminder as we spend our days adulting through life. Being an adult with all its responsibilities can weigh us down and force us to forget that when we are being creative and and enjoying it, it is because we trust our skills and instincts. We know what to do, we know how to do it, we may simply need to push a few levels or elements to remain fresh and relevant…or we can hunker down and trust our instincts and stop worrying about what anyone else thinks. Go with your gut and produce what you want to produce…and enjoy the process.
So today let me encourage you to trust yourself. KNOW that you KNOW what you are doing in what it is you do…and give yourself a break. Being creative doesn’t always mean riding off the rails or being defiant. Sometimes our best creative moments are when we are producing as ourselves and being genuine about who we are and what we want to express. There is no one out there like you…so you do you and everything else will fall into place.
