A Noble Language We Can All Speak

Ink & Micron pen on Toned Pastel Paper – Words: Robert Herrick

I was watching a video online and at the end I shed a few tears. The emotions I felt and the beauty of the video, I couldn’t help it. The tears flowed and it felt good to be able to express my feelings and reactions that way. Sometimes how we feel can only be expressed through tears. These words from Robert Herrick helped me understand that and reminded me that tears are a noble source, a healthy reaction, and a great way to express what we do not have the words to express.

When I get emotionally bound up, I have go to movies that always make me cry. It’s a Wonderful Life, Sense & Sensibility, or if I need to cry REALLY bad I watch The Holiday. Any of those movies make me sob like a baby, which is often EXACTLY what I need to do. Being healthy means dealing with our emotions, even if that means forcing ourselves to cry when we need a good cry – happy cry, sad cry, it’s still a good cry! Emotions can make us want to act out to let the emotion out, even if that acting out is punching a pillow, walking outside at a high speed on a cold night, wallowing in our pajamas, or a good cry. Shoving our emotions down, forcing them to be hidden, ignored or even forgotten eventually backs up on us all. Somewhere down the line emotions will come out again, and most likely not in a positive or healthy manner. Healthy people deal with their emotions even when it makes them feel less than or weak…ignoring emotions in life makes them harder to handle down the line. Wisdom tells us to let it out, even if that means tears.

Let me encourage you today to deal with whatever emotions you have been hiding inside. Let them out, find your own outlet – running, walking, ice cream or a really long cry – let it out! You think you are wise, strong or in control by shoving how you feel aside. Oh contraire! Strong people deal with their emotions, they cry, they scream at the moon, they run it off, they talk to someone to sort it all out. To be the best you, you need to deal with whatever emotional need you have in a healthy way. Let it out, talk to someone or have a good cry. Let those tears flow as they are indeed a noble language we all can speak no matter our spoken language of choice.
