ONE Small Step…Just One Step Today

Ink on Gel Print Monotype – Words: Anonymous

Here we are again at the beginning of a new year, a new season, with a chance to update, change or remain the same. The possibilities are endless, which in and of itself can feel very daunting. I was flipping through one of my favorite quote books, and these words slapped me across the face…

Only those who do nothing make no mistakes

– Anonymous

I am comforted in those words as I look back and face the moments when I have failed. We’re human, failure is part of living. Losing, making mistakes, failing big and bold – those only count as a failure if we do not reflect and learn the lesson. So taking the time to figure out what went wrong, how it could go better AND what we are willing to do to change moving forward is a good thing. The best people fail, they fail often and they fail over and over again. Like these words remind us, if we do nothing we will fail.

It’s only six days into a new year and that one New Year’s resolution you swore you would do this year may already be sliding to the side. That’s okay…it happens to the best of us. You don’t have to only make changes at the beginning of a year…there are 364 more days to change. Tomorrow is another day to take a deep breath and do your best to actually do that one thing you wanted to accomplish this year.

Let’s look at it this way, what ONE THING do you want to do today to make tomorrow better. It doesn’t have to be monumental – like solving world hunger – although that would be fantastic! It can be as basic as making your bed, walking around your block, or calling the person you want to reconnect with. Small steps lead to giant victories, but only if we do something. Change is much easier to digest when it happens slowly, in smalls bites, in things we can manage without attaching guilt or shame. It’s one day at a time…one small step that leads to a giant leap. And if we reflect back on this quote, we only really fail when we do nothing.

So today, do something. Make your bed, walk the block, text that friend. One thing…just one thing. It may not solve world hunger, yet it gets you moving and anything is easier to navigate when it is actually moving.
