Inktober Day 25: Have the Courage to Open It

Ink on Watercolor paper – Words: Anais Nin

Hind sight is always better than when we experience things the first time. Looking back provides us with the opportunity to include insight, the ability to ponder, and the clear thought processes brought about by facing the truth after the fact. We humans can be such self-focused beings that we get in our own way. Time gives us the gift of humility. We can better see our own errors AND we now have a chance to correct what was intolerable before. Lessons learned are often easier to swallow when a little time has passed.

We all have those funny things that happened to us, that were NOT very funny when they happened. In that moment we were angry, humiliated, unaware or even blind to the humor in the situation. Time is a gift. Being able to live the event then relive it later on is an amazing way to learn more about ourselves. It is like living life twice…as Anais Nin says in this quote. Some of our best family stories – that get told and retold – are the ones where it wasn’t funny at the time BUT it is a real hilarious story now!

So what have you learned by living your life twice? Once in the moment and once in retrospect? What habits have you noticed that have given you the gift of not wanting to repeat them again? And how are you a better person from reviewing past events and growing beyond that point in time. Time is indeed a gift, that is if we have the courage to open it.
