I like that Meg Cabot commented that people will give you all sorts of advice about writing…or anything you are doing. Even if you did not ask for their thoughts or advice, they give it. Somehow we as people give our thoughts and advice on all sorts of topics without ever being asked. What’s up with that?
Over the years I have learned that advice not asked for is often unwelcome and forgotten (even if it is right!) . I have learned to ask to provide my feedback by using the following phrase, “May I make a suggestion, or share my thoughts?” It gives people the options to accept it, or forego it all together. When I ask, people are more open to listening and truly think on my thoughts. I get that, I do the same thing. When I have been given the option to hear their thoughts, somehow what gets shared is more palatable.
Meg Cabot also reminds us that we have to create for ourselves first. People will blow with the wind and are often fickle. When we invest by sharing our own thoughts, doing things our own way, and when we are true to ourselves, THAT is when we are successful. Creative people struggle with their work being accepted, liked and criticized…I know I do. For a long time I listened to that little voice in my head telling me how to play it safe, be like everyone else. Once I set my sights on being true to myself, everything changed.
Let me encourage you today to do your thing, your way. Not to be offensive or spiteful, simply employing the courage to make your work your own. There is no other creative person who can do EXACTLY what you do…so you be you!
