Inktober Day 20: When to STOP

Ink on watercolor paper – words: Lucy Maude Montgomery

Yes, I am writing this on October 21st instead of the day it was intended…I had to stop and rest. I created the art and had to stop working before I collapsed…check out my Inktober Day 19 post for details! I did not know when I lettered these words from Lucy Maude Montgomery, author of the the Anne of Green Gables novels, how appropriate they would be for my circumstances. Sometimes the best thing you can do is stop!

Our lives are comprised of so many layers and elements which intertwine, that sometimes one element circumvents everything else. Sometimes we get so absorbed in what we are doing that we forget to manage all the other elements in our world. And sometimes, our energy has been expended and nothing else is going to happen…that is if we want to stay healthy and alive! In my case I had to know when to stop and just go to bed.

When was the last time you had to call it quits in a great way? You knew you had reached your limit and you also knew that proceeding on your current course was not only unwise, it was unsafe and might jeopardize your progress. Maybe you had to step away before you over engineered the project. Maybe you had to walk away from a slippery conversation before you said words in anger. OR maybe, you had exhausted yourself in one thing and had nothing left to give that other thing…and wisdom told you to stop. We’ve all been there. Good news is the world kept spinning, the sun kept shining, and life progressed.

Wisdom is knowing when to stop. Courage is knowing that you do matter, and will be able to give and perform better after good night’s sleep. Like good writer’s now when yo stop writing, good people know when to stop and rest.
