I grew up going to the library. It was a land of wonder, and the women who worked there ALWAYS knew exactly which book I needed to read next. I remember sitting in those wooden chairs at a big table, turning the pages of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory; time seemed to stand still while I was plunged into adventures I never could have imagined. I still love books and libraries, and give thanks for the creative people who wrote and published those wonderful stories….and the amazing women who always knew where my next adventure was on all those shelves!
Of course my love of libraries made me appreciate these words from Jennifer Weiner. She reminds us that time spent reading, learning, filling our heads with stories and creativity is indeed time well spent. Be it learning a new technique, immersing ourselves in a new place or time, or simply just re-reading our favorite book finding new ways to admire beloved characters. Time spent absorbing your favorite topic IS time well spent. The dishes and laundry can wait. The bills will be there later this afternoon. And, somehow your problems, tangled up thoughts, ideas and creative impulses all seem to work towards harmony after having read a good book.
There is magic in a library card. There are no limits other than time to read, and nothing to fear other than a really well written villain. Give yourself the gift of reading, LOTS and LOTS of reading. Let the person you are becoming be someone who abuses their privileges…at the library that is!
