Inktober Day 1: Let the Multitasking Begin

Ink on Watercolor Paper – Words: Agatha Christie

It is Inktober, and I am off and running for the month. What is Inktober you ask? It is a global challenge to create a piece of work with ink each day in October. There are only three rules: 1) Create a piece using ink. 2) Post that work online. 3) Repeat rules one and two everyday in October. I have decided this year to feature quotes from female authors…women whose writing has changed our world! And of course I have to start with my favorite female author, Agatha Christie! Her books have been read more than any other single author…ANY single author. The only book more read than hers in the Bible. Quite an accomplishment for a women who people only saw as a housewife.

I enjoy this quote about washing the dishes because it reminds me of two things. First, that everything is important even doing the dishes. Time spent doing chores – like dishes, laundry, vacuuming, etc. – is not time wasted. It is the familiarity of those tasks that allows our mind to wander and think on other things…like planning a novel. Second, I am reminded that no one is immune to doing things they don’t always want to do, so take advantage of the time and think about things you do want to do! Instead of pouting about chores, use that time to your advantage.

We never know when that next best thought will creep into our minds and blow away the cobwebs. And speaking of blowing away, I am writing this after blowing leaves off our drives and walkways…which is when I organized my thoughts for this post. I sweat, I get some steps, and I got time to think. We are all busy, burdened, hurried and often feel WAY over scheduled. Why not tweak your thought process a bit and take advantage of the time you have to do the thinking you need to do? Driving to and from work, mowing the lawn, walking the dog, or even, dare I say it, scrubbing the toilets!?! Instead of complaining about all those things, think!

So on this first day of Inktober, let us revel in the advise of the most read female author on the globe, Agatha Christie. She planned her novels while doing the dishes. What is preventing you from using your available thinking time wisely? Maybe today is the day you roll up your sleeves and give yourself the gift of time to think! Let the multitasking begin!
