For Scribbled Lives – a private, online group encouraging weekly work and creativity – we were given the prompt of Sunrise & Sunset. Anything to do with either of those was fair game. I had just been creating gel print monotypes during our monthly playdate in our studio, and this one made me think of sunsets. So I dug through my quote books and found this one from Suzanne Collins…I thought it appropriate for this background.
Most of us pass our days without much fanfare or trouble. Don’t get me wrong, we all have momentous events in our lives and monstrous things that happen to us; most days do not contain either or both. Most days we live our lives doing the ordinary things of life that make up each morning, noon and night. We work through the week suddenly understanding that March is already facing October and realize Fall is here with Winter right around the corner. Time passes, things get done, goals are met or unmet and our days all too often burr together to form weeks, months and years. Children are born, grow up and now are themselves becoming parents. And before we know it we find that first gray hair reminding us that we are not in charge of how time marches forward wether we like it or not.
These words help us put into perspective the value of time. None of us knows exactly how many days we will have the brilliant chance to brush our teeth or drink another cup of coffee, not always in that order. We cannot predict when our days will end, so these words remind us to value each and every one….no matter what!
So today, let me remind you that the chores of life are what often build the infrastructure that contains our life. Boring, mundane, exciting and alluring – every element of our day makes us who we are and helps us value our time on earth. Never let the commute to work or the silence of nighttime lull you into a feeling of nothingness…life is all around us no matter what we are doing. It is our choice to savor it all, even washing the dishes or folding the laundry. None of us knows how many more sunrises or sunsets we will be given to enjoy…so enjoy them all…even if it is while you are folding the laundry! Somehow that clean smell of a fresh shirt enhances the chilly Fall morning as you head to work. So get out there and savor each sunrise and sunset!
