We make so many decisions each and every day that after a while we think nothing of making one and moving on. What to wear, what to have for breakfast, what work to do in the morning, who to contact, how to spend our money, what stupid news to ignore…SOOOO many decisions. And then there are the tough decisions. The ones that keep us up at night or stay in our heads for weeks at a time. These are the decisions we know will change things, move our lives forward or set us back. It is these decisions I believe Amelia Earhart refers to in this quote.
I have a great nephew who is deciding which college to attend. He will be a senior in high school and knows that attending university after he graduates is his next step. What is wonderful to watch is how his parents are aiding him in this decision. They have taken him on campus tours and reminded him that he can change his mind on his major or where he wants to go…he’s only seventeen. Are you doing what you thought you wanted to dedicate your life to doing when you were seventeen? If yes, good for you. If no, then good for you for having the guts to change your mind. Making a lifelong decision at seventeen is daunting, if not crazy! How in the world do you know your life’s plan at that age? Yet we ask them to decide and move forward knowing that THIS is their path.
When I was seventeen I thought I wanted to be an Accountant. THANK GOD I had the guts to change my mind…Economics, Accounting and Statistics in the same semester aided in helping me make that decision. I remember making the choice to change my major was a tough one, let alone telling my parents…who fully supported me by the way. I also remember that once that decision was made, it was easy to move forward…the rest was just tenacity.
It is the decision to act that changes things. That moment when you KNOW which direction to go AND that you are ready to head that way. THAT is when the sleepless nights, the impending fears and consequences, the changes and tactical things become clear. The thoughts in your head begin to move together in the same direction. It still may feel daunting, it may still be a bit overwhelming, and yet all that is a fear you can live with as you know your new direction is the better direction for your life.
So let me encourage you to have the courage to make that life changing, path altering, personal growth awareness decision. We only get one life and the decisions we make each and everyday take us closer to being and doing what makes us who we are, or those decisions keep us up at night knowing we need to make a change. Having the courage to make the decision to act IS what makes us who we are…the rest is merely tenacity!
