For our seventh week in Scribbled Lives, we were asked to create something with sewn letters. I took the prompt literally and sewed letters onto a pair of jeans. I call these jeans my cat jeans, as they are covered with cat patches. I embroidered ‘hello’ in pink thread right next to one of my favorite Hello Kitty patches. It was a bit of a struggle to get started, yet once I did I was off and running. I had fun and remembered why I liked sewing.
It had been a busy week, so I had little time to do what I had to do let alone complete a prompt. So I employed one of my favorite sayings, “Don’t overcomplicate Jello!” I went with the simplest and easiest way to get the job done. Literally! Check the box, done, time to move to the next item on my list and keep moving forward.
Some days wisdom tells us that we are not able to do it all, or not everything you do today has to be complicated or difficult…or even perfect. Some days done is enough. For me, it was this sewn letter prompt. I am not minimizing my commitment to the group or the process; I am being honest with myself to get the job done and move on. Creativity wasn’t with me, time was not on my side, and the to do list was WAAAAAY longer than I had imagined.
When I posted this to the group, people had fun things to say and appreciated me taking it literally. After I posted, a couple other people shared their sewn letters on fabric. TA-DA! Give yourself license to get that simple Jello task done, and you may be giving someone else the gift of release which allows them to get their Jello task done too! I smiled as I read the comments and was relieved to be done. I then anxiously waited for the next week’s prompt.
Give yourself a break. Don’t overcomplicate Jello….it’s water, ice and a box of Jello. Simple gets it done. Not everything in life requires high level thinking, elaborate responses or even tons of time. Sometimes just clearing out your to do list as quickly and simply as possible IS the best use of your time and brain energy. Don’t overcomplicate Jello…just get it done!
