Inktober Day 22: Do It On Purpose

Marker on watercolor paper – Words: Dolly Parton

I appreciate Dolly telling us to find out who we are AND do it on purpose. We figure out who we are by trying, working, failing, trying something else, succeeding, then doing all of that all over again. We learn about ourselves by interacting with others. We learn what we like by trying new things. We learn how we handle pressure, confusion, stress and all the other aspects of who we are by living each and every day.

I have done this quote before, this time I wanted to make people think about the possibilities of life. What career do you want? Think it’s too late to change, not true! What personality traits do you have? Want to gain new ones, try them out and see how they “fit” you. Want to be funny, then be funny. Want to be smart, then study and work hard. Want to be kind, compassionate, generous, philanthropic? You can be any of those things if you want…and do it on purpose.

We may be self aware, yet are we self improving? Are we fine tuning ourself or simply phoning in each day hoping it goes by quickly? Yes there are seasons in life when getting up and brushing out teeth IS the day’s accomplishment. We don’t have to let that be every day. We have the capacity to change, grow, learn and improve our lives and we can do it on purpose.

So do YOU on purpose. Be strong, courageous, funny, smart or quiet and sweet…just do it as yourself. Don’t like that, then do something to change it. Like Dolly said, find out who you are and do it on purpose!
