Whether we like it or not, we are in life where we have chosen to be. It is our choices that have determined our path. We are not victims, we are in control of things – how we react, how we choose, even who we travel with along that path. As Dolly Parton reminds us, we can change our path by paving another one.
HHHmmm – that sounds like a lot of work. Yes it is. It means chiseling away at what we do not like about our path and crafting a new one. It means ripping out the old and installing the new. It means building new habits and sticking to our new choices even when the old, comfortable ways call our name. And that change can be very messy, tiring, and take a great deal of time. It takes a conscious effort to make a new path.
Not sure you have the courage to do that? Take a moment and look at where you were in life twenty years ago, even ten years ago. My guess is it is not anywhere close to where you are now. Circumstances changed, you changed, even times changed. So by looking back we can see that change is possible…we can choose it or we can let it happen to us. Either way changing our path is possible.
So make that tough decision to start paving your new path. Even if it takes one small step each day…it will be worth it. If Dolly Parton – one of twelve children, living in poverty and destined to be stuck – if Dolly can change her path then so can you. One step at a time…just on step. Do one thing everyday to help you build the path you want. Your life and your world is worth it.
