Inktober Day 12: Dare

Ink and watercolor – Words: Maya Angelou

When was the last time you excepted more from yourself? Where you dared to believe that anything was possible? A time when you took a chance, jumped before knowing all the facts, or even moved forward without it all being planned out? When did someone last dare you to go beyond what you thought was possible in yourself or a situation? And when did you dare to believe that you could do more than you thought was possible?

Our lives are maintained by the day to day things we do to sustain what we have already built. Our lives are changed and improved by what we dare to do and believe. Anyone can live out a normal day. Anyone can survive or even go with the flow. It takes courage, chutzpah and even a little whimsy to dare greatness in what may feel like an ordinary life.

Who am I to dare?” Is that what those old tapes in your brain keep telling you? “Why should I go out and try something I’m not sure will work?” Is that how you avoid your fears and play it safe? And then there is the old stand by, “My life is going fine, Who am I to rock the boat?” These are the ways we often avoid taking that leap and daring to work for something different, better, or even fantastic! It is the silent words mediocrity whispers in our ear to prevent us from taking that dare.

Nothing happens if someone doesn’t make a change, take a risk, DARE to believe. There are no promises, no guarantees in life. And yes, there is a good chance you could fall flat on your face. The best people we all know are the ones who fell big, got bruised then got back up. They remind us that the real fear is not falling down, the REAL fear is having to get back up and face it all over again. Pride is a terrible thing…so is mediocrity.

Maya Angelou reminds us in these words that the most important single thing is to dare. So brush yourself off. Stop listening to those tapes that remind you of every mistake you’ve ever made. And stop buying what the world is selling. YOU can do it. YOU can take that chance in your next endeavor. And YOU – YES Y-O-U are worth the effort and have the power to change your world. All it takes is the courage and wisdom to dare!
