Inktober Day 6: Making A Life

Ink on watercolor paper – Words: Maya Angelou

We do so many things in the name of making a living. We forget sometimes that our original goal was making a life. Because what good is a fat income if we have nothing else to do but work? As Maya Angelou points out in this quote, making a living and making a life are not the same thing.

So why do you work so hard to make a living? How much are you enjoying your work? It is something you are passionate about, or just a job? And when your work day is done, what kind of life do you go home to? Is it a life you want or the life you simply let happen? We all have hopes and dreams about how our lives will become. The wanting can keep us motivated when times get tough or when times get us down. In the end, the best life is wanting the life you have. If you have worked so hard to build your life, how wonderful is your life if in the end you don’t want it?

Take time to build the life you want, even if that means making small intentional steps instead of sort-of-okay leaps and bounds. Because when you land it is best to want to be there, instead of still spending your non-working hours wanting a different life. It is a sorrowful moment when you realize the all your hard work has built a life you no longer value.
