Inktober Day 4: “If you want things to change”

Ink on watercolor paper – Words: Dolly Parton

One of the things I love about Dolly Parton is that she never uses her background, upbringing or personal characteristics as an excuse for anything in her life. She has worked hard and knows that the hard work is what has made her who she is today! “If you want things to change...” great reminder that it is up to us to decide. And that decision usually means also being willing to put in the hard work, the lonely work, the tough, messy, uncomfortable hours of working even when nothing changes. Then one day everything springs out and life is better, different, life becomes what we wanted it to become. Nothing happens unless someone is willing to do the hard work.

So when was the last time you put in the work to get what you want? I mean the REAL work. The quiet hours, the time alone, the thought processing, back breaking, grueling, mind tiring hours of work? Sometimes we forget that we got where we are today by getting it done, long ago, yet we still put in the time and effort. To get to a new place we have to roll up our sleeves again and get to work. UGH! As we get older it can be harder to get up and get moving. We become comfortable and think, “Maybe it’s not all that bad…maybe I can just stay the same.” Which is a quiet surrender to that voice in our head that tells us to settle and leave well enough alone.

Your life deserves more than just settling or the status quo. You deserve the best AS LONG AS you are willing to do the work. Rats! There’s that four-letter word again…W-O-R-K! Dolly reminds us that working is a gift, a pleasure, a means to an end, and the only way to get what we want. All we have to do is decide and get busy. Which goes back to her quote…”if you want things to change.

So do you? Do you want something to change in your life? It’s okay to ponder what saying yes really means….it means (and here’s that four-letter word again) work! Do the work, get the reward. It’s that simple. Don’t want to work, then things stay the same. Somehow it sounds better when Dolly says it!
