Be Afraid and Do It Anyway!

Ink on Watercolor paper – Words: Carrie Fisher

I was working out and the Coach reminded us that the thing you like doing least is probably the thing your body needs most. So do more of it…It made me think about these words from Carrie Fisher. She reminds us that being afraid is a good thing, a healthy thing, a normal reaction to the ups and downs of life. It also reminds us what we need to keep doing anyway, not to allow the fear to stop us from doing that thing we need to do most.

I worked with a man who changed his hairstyle at least once a year…which usually meant parting his hair differently. Not a huge change, and yet each time he did it he was reminded that being comfortable is not always a good thing. He commented about how it took him a few weeks to get used to that change and during that time we felt uncomfortable and odd. He also recognized that he appreciated things more, was less likely to be thrown by other changes in his life AND he left more compassion for other people experiencing change. Just s simple part change made his face his fear of change from a more positive perspective.

So what are you doing that makes you afraid? Are you learning something new, trying something different, or even mastering something that has plagued you for years? Have you changed something in your appearance, rearranged furniture, taken on a new role, or made a major change in your life? Any or all of those things have the power to make you feel afraid…do them anyway. We stagnate and become less than ourselves when we stay in our comfortable places. Fear and being afraid are natural emotional reactions when we are growing, changing and becoming.

Let me challenge you to step out and be afraid. Do the thing you are fraud to do most, push yourself to be better than you are today. Let that tingle in your stomach, those seat beads or that nervous heart pumping encourage you to keep going. We have the power to change our lives into anything we want to be, we just have to be afraid and do it anyway!
