The Prize You Get from Grinding It Out

Sumi ink on watercolor paper – Words: Jim Ryan

We all have great ideas. Ones that give us enough get up and go to start moving in a forward direction. Those ideas that make us think, “What if?”. The ones that have enough power within them to push us to live and act differently. Big ideas, small inklings, ferocious changes or minor adjustments. No matter the size, shape or color of your idea, the fact that it is YOUR idea is enough to make it worth investing further.

The truly hard work starts the first day you choose to put that idea into action. It takes discipline, which is usually not very exciting or sexy. It is the day to day grind, trying and failing which is where greatness is made, not just in the ability to have a dream. Nothing happens unless someone gets busy, works hard – REALLY HARD – doing the work to turn an idea into reality. And most of that work is never seen or recognized unless the idea is successful. Learning from the failures, getting back up and working more is a process any great endeavor demands.

Not everyone will understand or admire your hard work. Friends, family, coworkers, they may not get why you prefer to grind it out instead of spending time with them. Not knowing the passion behind your idea makes it hard to see where all your efforts are headed. And if you dare to share your idea with them, they might not get it at all which can be devastating. Or they call you crazy! Remember, some of the best ideas that are now part of our everyday life at one point someone called crazy.

Let me encourage you to do the work, practice the self discipline necessary to take your idea from infancy to adulthood. This process will help you become the person you have always wanted to be. And no matter if your idea lives or dies, the fact that you were willing to put in the work IS the prize. After all, nothing happens if no one works.
