The Sludge of Life

Inside all of us is sludge and gunk that has built up over the years. Maybe it is in our head, maybe our physical systems, maybe a little of both. We learn how to deal with it and how to compensate when we are not feeling our best. Then there are times when we cannot help but do less than our best due to the sludge. It has built up to a point that it prevents us from functioning the way we want, so we muddle through it all.

So how do we get rid of the sludge? Let’s face it, we know, we all know. We just may not always have the self discipline to actually execute good choices on a daily basis. The things we think or put in our brains, the food we eat, the way we exercise or remain active. Whether we like it or not the basics do work – eat right, get rest, and exercise all work together to keep us healthy.

What choices do I need to change to feel better? Stop watching the news or participating in negative discussions? Is my diet what it needs to be in order for me to feel the way I want? What do I need to stop eating so my body can function the way it was designed? How do I get moving more often? Does that mean exercise or a class, or simply walking the dog more? And how do I change my attitude about these things so they are what I want to do instead of what I want to avoid?

It’s all about choices, little ones, big ones, daily ones, conscious ones, and changing habits. What makes most of us more motivated is a goal with a timeline. A date we want to be able to walk a certain distance without feeling like we want to die. A week without eating the foods that make you feel bad, then two weeks, then three weeks, and so on. What can you do instead of filling your head with negative – read a book. listen to a book, or do something creative. Again, it is all about choices.

The sludge gets in there because of the choices we make, or fail to make. To get it out we need to make different choices. Try doing one thing differently today and see how it goes.
