It’s the Small Things

I worked outside today, cleaning up around the house. It was hard work and I was glad to do it. There is something very satisfying about manual labor. You instantly see the fruits of your labor. You sweat, you ache, and you are glad to keep going as you see the beauty unfold. I better appreciate our property when I work on it, and I am grateful for our many blessings. There is so much to notice when you work outside.

I noticed that the moss was blooming. These very tiny flowers were scattered throughout the bright green areas around our house. I walked past them a dozen times before I stopped, knelt down and actually enjoyed their beauty. They are these little blue and purplish flowers that only show up in Spring. As the moss is growing and spreading itself, it blooms. I was so busy working that I passed these beauties by; if I had not stopped what I was doing I would have missed them all.

As I was burning the dried branches from the yard, I thought about these little flowers. All too often it is the small things in life that we overlook. We are so busy getting things done that we forget to take time, slow down and enjoy what is right in front of us. We focus on the big changes and miss the small elements. We have large goals and neglect what is right there at our feet waiting for us to savor their beauty.

It’s a busy day and you probably have lots of things to do, items to work on, a list to complete. What is all that busy preventing you from enjoying? Be sure to slow down so you don’t miss the little things, the small blessings of life.
