Music…

The calligraphy prompt for this week was music. We had to do something to do with or use the word music. This was half of my submission for the week. My nephew Connor will be twenty-one this month, so I made him a birthday card using the Happy Birthday music standard. He won’t get this card yet, I plan to mail it closer to his actual birthday.

The sheet music is from a piano recital book a client gave me from their piano bench. They were selling their piano and wanted someone to have all the music their children learned to play when they were young. I have utilized those pages in multiple pieces of art, and thought my nephew would enjoy this page from a 1935 song book.

It is amazing to think of the things people save and store to remember portions of life. And how people are now willing to let those items be reused and repurposed for another generation to enjoy. Creative and inventive art is being developed from the memories and remnants of lives and loves long past. My dad would have been four years old when this sheet of music was printed; he will be eighty seven next month. I think of the years this piece of music sat in a piano bench being played for family birthdays and at children’s parties. All the family and friends who celebrated while someone played the notes on this piece of paper.

There are incredible ideas and emotions that are now being shared as we revisit and reuse elements of the past. The stories items could tell if we simply had a chance to listen. A part of me feels that we are releasing the joy and fun from the past as we allow more people to share in these elements. It is an honor and privilege to be able to reuse and ignite the imagination of more people by repurposing favorite things from the past.
