Being Known

In our neck of the woods you can find out anything you want to know by visiting the Feed Store. This is CC the guardian and rodent protection system. When you visit you are greeted by a gentle rub on the leg and a few kind meows. If you return the greeting and rub CC’s head, you will be escorted to your truck at the conclusion of your business. We have seen this kitty comrade for years and look forward to seeing our feline friend every Spring.

There is something to be said for being known. There is something validating that provides a confirmed sense of belonging when you go somewhere and people recognize you. When we visited our Feed Store today the owner knew us, CC greeted us, and we enjoyed chatting with the helpers to talk about local news. The sense of community rushed over us and reminded us that we are blessed to live where we live.

Where do you gain a sense of belonging? Where do you feel most at home? Where are you known as a customer, a neighbor, or even a friend? Do you have attachments to people and places? Or do you simply travel through your day getting things done and remain detached from those around you?

It is a blessing to be known, which means you must allow yourself to be known. You have to break down the walls that prevent you from building relationships. We shy away from getting too close to people for fear of being misunderstood, or because we are self conscious, or simply because we are too busy getting things done to slow down and chat. Getting involved with people can make things messy, emotional, and at times awkward. People slow things down and require a different level of engagement that takes time and energy. Being part of a community means you care, you put your money where your heart lives, and being consistently yourself no matter who you encounter.

When CC rubbed on my leg this morning I knew I was exactly where I was supposed to be. I was reminded of our blessings and appreciated the hard working people who live around us. I was proud to support our local businesses and help support the lives of those who live on our street. I hope you have a CC in your world that reminds you of the things that matter where you live.
