I spent part of the weekend blowing leaves and debris out of our yard. By removing the layers of gunk and dead leaves, the green growing things were exposed. It was as if suddenly the world had gone from black and white to color in one afternoon. We have buds and flowers peeping out all over our land. The moss is racing tall for the sun, and the flowers are working hard to push through the ground in order to say hello to the sunlight.
The renewal of Spring brings with it color, and energy, and the promise that we all get to start over; it is nature’s way of reminding us that everyone deserves a second chance. Year after year we endure the darkness, cold, and short days of Winter. We look forward to the change of seasons, the arrival of both Spring and Summer because they bring out the playful child in us all. Shorts and windy afternoons, evenings catching fire flies and star lit nights tasting marsh mallows over a fire. The days seem endless and the adventure goes untold. Imaginations run wild and mischief is somehow in the air. And no matter what you do or don’t do, the memories you make on summer days follow you the rest of your life. It’s amazing what a little bit of green can do for your soul. It brings life back into the dark corners and ignites the boundless vitality within.
So where do you need a little green? Have you been in the same job for years and wonder what you are doing there? Maybe you have lived in the same place for many years and are tired of it. Maybe you have been wearing the same basic hairstyle since the eighties and want a new look. Or maybe you simply need a little green to remind you that new things are always on the horizon. New doesn’t mean that we chuck the old, it means renewal or repurpose or reinvention. It means learning something new, or rearranging to reinvent, or maybe even a cut or curl to get a new look. The old can be new again, even if it is hidden beneath the rubbish and dead leaves.
It takes energy to uncover the beauty beneath the old. It takes courage to clean up and seek change. It takes wisdom to know what to change and what to leave alone. And sometimes it just takes the hope that things could change to get us off the couch and get moving. As the days get longer and the sun works harder to war the earth, find one thing where you could use a little green and set it free. Have the courage to change, or rearrange, or repurpose or reinvent your life. The possibilities are endless if you have the gumption to get moving.
