My friend’s daffodils are out of the ground and very close to blooming. When she pointed them out my heart jumped for joy. These simple yellow buds reminded me that Mother Nature is good for her word. The promise that Spring will soon arrive is brought to life by a small yellow flower working hard to be seen.
What promises have you heard in your life that were kept and have solidified your belief in human kind? What broken promises are you still trying to get over? And what promises are you still waiting to have realized? There are people you know who keep their promises, and others you know will never be true to their word. And then there are those people in your world where the jury is still out. Promises are easy to make but not always easy to keep.
Making a promise is about making a commitment and then living up to that commitment no matter that circumstances may come your way. It is easy to make promises while emotions are high and powerful; the challenge is keeping that promise when the emotions of the moment have faded. When times get tough are you willing to do whatever it takes to keep your promises? Are you willing to be good for your word when it is inconvenient, uncomfortable, or may even cause you pain? How far will you go to make sure you keep your promises?
Next time you want to utter the praise, “I promise” be sure you mean it, no matter what. It is powerful phrase that can make or break relationships and lifetimes. Everyone wants others to keep their word, the true sign of character is expecting that same level of obligation from ourselves. Mother Nature reminds us right now that it doesn’t matter how cold, or wet, or dull the past months have been, Spring will arrive as promised. How about your promises, are you just as accountable as these daffodils?
