We are in life where we have chosen to be; we may not like where we are and we may want it to be different, yet no matter how we look at it our choices have delivered us to this destination. Step by step we made choices – one by one – and they have led us here. That may cause you to breath a heavy sigh, or it may confirm what you have known all along.
This is not to say that the choices of others have not impacted our choices; none of us lives in a vacuum. We choose how we handle situations, emotions, life changes, disappointments, family drama, expectations, and everything that goes with becoming an adult. Some people have embraced being a nerd while others did everything in their power to appear anything but smart. Either way, it was about making a choice. Some struggle with trying to be more pretty, or part of the in crowd, or change something about their appearance in order to fit in, while others have never known that turmoil as their beauty is evident no matter where they arrive. Again, it is about how we choose to handle, manage, change what we have been given.
There are personal preferences that impact our choices. Do I have a habit of saving money or spending it? Do I prefer big spaces or cozy rooms? Do I always need the approval of others, or am I content no matter the company I find myself within? Do I like dogs or cats, or no pets? Am I a kid person or prefer adults? All the combinations of our habits, preferences and options combine to create the home where we live, the way we spend our time, how we react or create drama, and how we interact with other people. No matter how we have been raised or the language we were taught, we always have a choice to stay the same, learn, and change.
Then there are the cross road moments in life. What do I want to be when I grow up? Do I ever want to grow up? Where do I want to live? How do I want to contribute to this world and leave it better than I found it? How do I want to share my gifts and my ideas to help other people make their world better? Life can be like navigating a huge map with no particular destination in mind, unless we choose otherwise. It would be simple if we only followed the path of those who went before us, but if everyone travels life that way most of our best inventions, ideas, and discoveries would never have come into being. Someone has to try, fail, and try again for progress and learning to occur.
So what will you choose today? How will you react to the horrible way people treat you, or the miraculous thought that just entered your head? Will you be the victim or the victor? Will you let the road determine your way, or will you take responsibility for your actions and choose wisely? We are in life where we have chosen to be…so choose wisely.
