Just when you see the light at the end of the tunnel, SLAM! something seems to pull you back to reality. Two steps forward three steps back. It’s like experiencing a sunny day in the fifties to wake up the next morning to a hard frost. It’s the reminder in February that Spring is on the horizon, yet Winter is still in full form and rules the day.
It’s those times in life when you make progress and feel as if nothing could tarnish your winning streak, only to experience a large bump in the road and lose control. The momentum is gone and you are coasting trying to figure out how to get back up to cruising speed.
The problem isn’t losing momentum, when you work hard enough you will get the back in time. The challenge is the space between your ears where you now fear losing momentum and worry about it, which takes up valuable mental energy. Hard work gets you where you want to go, as long as you have the mental game to support the long game. When we let the set backs get under our skin we have a hard time believing that we are worthy of good times and excellence, and we have an even harder time not watching out for bumps in the road instead of gliding without fear towards our goals.
The other side of this is that the bumps in the road can make us want it more, work harder, and learn more. The best lessons in life are usually surrounded by failure, doubt, and setbacks. These hard learned lessons never leave us, and urge us to keep getting up after every fall. They reminded us that no one is perfect and everyone can learn something to improve their game.
As you wake up and face another bitter cold Winter morning, remember that no matter how hard it tries Winter cannot hang around forever. The seasons will change and Spring will arrive, bringing with it the beauty and color you miss and so richly deserve. The setbacks will subside and your hard work will pay off. Don’t let the frost get into your head, it eventually melts. Keep getting up and facing the ay with courage to believe that the warmth of Spring days will be here soon.
