For our anniversary this year my husband and I are taking a class. Not just any class at any school, we’re taking a “Beautiful Papers” class at the John C. Campbell Folk School. We’re going to spend the week learning how to make handmade papers by printing them ourselves. All week long we are going to spend time in class and together learning how to do one of our favorite things, make paper. We celebrated our actual anniversary date with dear friends, and thought about how we might commemorate the wonderful passage of time. We decided to learn something together about something we both enjoy.
Not everyone would think a week learning and being challenged sounds like fun. Not everyone would want to spend their vacation in a studio getting messy and filling their brains with new ideas and techniques. Not everyone wants a simple week learning and growing. But we do…and we are excited about it. Being together, spending time with others who are enthusiastic about paper, and learning something new. The creativity and passion we are sharing and gleaning is exciting to us both.
Sometimes the unconventional gift is the best gift. Sometimes doing what you want and not listening to what others think you should do is the best route. Sometimes you need to learn together to grow together. So this week we will have fun learning and growing. Stay tuned as we feature our lessons from our Beautiful Papers class.
