We have multiple cats, which requires multiple kitty litter boxes. Monday is garbage day, which means Sunday nights or Monday mornings requires a kitty litter box check, or change, or thorough cleaning. It is one of the most dreaded chores of our household. During the colder months of Winter it is surprising how much cats can deliver into their litter boxes each week. It almost makes me want to stop feeding them because I know I will have to deal with it when it comes out the other end. But loving living creatures means you have to deal with all aspects of the relationship, not only the parts you like.
Changing the kitty litter is one of the ordinary tasks of life. It happens on a regular basis and there is no way of getting around it, unless you stop owning cats. When the cuteness of the kitten grows into a full blown adult cat, there are chores and responsibilities. Feeding, cleaning, cat hair, and the endless openings and closings of the door to let them in and out. They add such warmth and value to our lives so it is all worth it.
But the ordinary days of life, what I call the kitty litter days, can drone on and on even when you don’t feel like life should be ordinary. It’s like the end of January when the new year is no longer so new, you’ve kept or broken all your new year’s resolutions, and there are still more than ten months until the holiday season rolls back around. The excitement and glamour of ‘new’ things are gone, and ordinary life stuff is what fills your days. These are the times when it can seem boring and hum drum to live the life you have made, and the day to day elements of life hold no allure or excitement. The shine is gone and everything seems rather dull, ordinary, like any other day.
The kitty litter days can get to you, especially if you compare your world to the lives of those around you. Everyone else seems to have a more interesting life than you. If they have kitty litter days it somehow seems glamorous or exotic. The grass is always greener on someone else’s side of the fence. Guess what, if they own cats they have kitty litter to change, cat hair to clean up, and felines to feed everyday. The ordinary tasks of life exist in their world as well.
Sometimes ya’ just gotta push through those kitty litter days and get the mundane tasks of life done. You have to make the bed, brush your teeth, do the laundry, pay bills, and all the other things that being an adult means. You have to cart the kids back and forth, attend yet another dumb meeting or answer the same emails over and over again. These may not seem like the most important things in life, yet they continually support all the elements of our world. Without them eventually your world would implode. These are not the glamorous and thrilling days of life, yet they make the fun times that much more exciting. The boring puts everything else into perspective. When I am having a kitty litter day I remind myself of the blessings and joys our cats bring to our world. I think of hat life would be without these to do items, and how fortunate I am to have ordinary tasks to complete. It means I am needed, blessed, and have built a life I want to live…and in reality I have no problems if my biggest challenge is changing the kitty litter on a weekly basis.
Put your kitty litter days into perspective and be glad you have something to do for the beings you love.
